It’s been a pretty good year over here in Kenworthy photo land: Leave A Message, the Nike Chosen Campaign, some great trips and a few covers to top it off. Well, things just got a bit better thanks to the boys over at Transworld Surf who chose Jason’s Bruce Irons flare cover as their 2011 Photo of the Year! A huge congrats to Worthy and cheers to TWS and crew.

…doesn’t mean we’re not busy. With the Hawaii season in the books, and a bit of a gap until the 2012 tour starts I’ve been able to spend a bit of time milling about at home. Luckily for us, the waves have been fun, the weather great, and a crop of the top young surfers in town. I’ve been shooting relentlessly with Kolohe Andino and crew. JK: 5 things most people don’t know about you…

LE: I want to sew, I never liked fish when I was younger, and I actually do have a bit of determination and fire deep down.

JK: Your first year on tour is over, tell me what what you have been doing since it ended.

LE: It’s been crazy. I went to New York for a couple weeks for the whole fashion week deal, and then went and enjoyed home for a bit. I actually started meditating and got really into pilates. So I found my inner zen. I found a new passion for 80′s rock music.

JK: Whose your favorite band?

LE: Dragon, it’s this Australian Band. I went to some bar and saw them, that was rad.

I pretend I can dance but I actually can’t to save my life, I’m really uncoordinated. I just roll with the fact that hair whipping is the new thing.

JK: What’s your dream trip?

LE: Dream trip… It would have to be a week in the Mentawais on the Pelagic and then a week in Bali shopping and having some cocktails: but getting good surf. The best of both worlds.

/>JK: Whose your celebrity crush?

LE: Leonardo DiCaprio, I love Leonardo DiCaprio. I loved him in Titanic, I loved him in The Beach, I dont know if I like him these days but back in the day… back when he was Jack, he was so cool.

JK: How can people keep up with everything you’re doing?

The North Shore season officially got under way this weekend. Unfortunately, the first days of the Haliewa waiting period were met with small, windy surf, but that isn’t going to keep us from getting excited about another winter on the rock! This photo was taken last February while on location filming the girls Leave A Message movie. While the girls were surfing a friendlier stretch of beach down the way, pipe was serving up some bombs for a select few chargers. This unfortunate soul didn’t quite make it… Click to view slideshow.

This is a new installment on the blog. Lets be honest, nobody really cares what I have to say. Thats why I’m a photographer. On the other hand, the people I point my lens at often have some pretty interesting insight; so as we go along I will pick their brains and bring to you their random thoughts. Let me know who you may want to hear from and I will track them down.

Let’s start with ASP Women’s World Champ Carissa Moore:

JK: CMoore, you just came off an Indo trip on the Pelagic, how was it?

CM: It was pretty much flat for the past twelve days. It was rainy, cloudy, I think it was liebers fault because everytime I go on a trip with him it just rains.

Really though, I did get some decent surf in and I felt like for myself it was a really progressive trip. I learned a lot and Shane Beschen came on the trip and helped me with push my airs higher and work on the technical aspect of my surfing; in that respect it was a trip worth while.

JK: Did you do the best air of your life?

CM: I did do the best air of my life on this trip hahaa! I was psyched cause after I pulled it I looked in and you and the filmers were claiming it for me on the beach.

JK: So after this we are going into the Hawaii season. Things are different for you this year, in a few days you get to compete agains the guys in the triple crown. Give me your true thoughts and expectations.

CM: Im trying to be realistic about the situation. I’m going up against guys that have age and experience on me, but my goal is to make two heats. Whether it is one at sunset and one at haliewa or two at a single one. Thats my goal and I just want to push myself.

JK:This year you won your first world title and you’ve won all sorts of amatuer titles coming up to this. How long do you see yourself continuing this domination?

CM:(laughs) Where are you putting this?

Every time I’m back on the tour I want to give the title run a chance, but I definetly have a few more written down on my bucket list.

JK: What can you see yourself doing besides surfing?

CM: I really want to become a rockstar/pop star (laughs). I want to keep traveling and surfing. Really though I would love to be a teacher some day. I want to go back to school and study to be a teacher and I want to work on a lot of different philanthropic projects.

JK: Whats one thing nobody knows about you?

CM: This halloween I was a sexy dark angel

JK: Anything for the fans?
